We are thinking about moving to Phoenix, area in a nice neighborhood?
WE are thinking about moving to Phoenix area in a nice, safe neighborhood with good schools public schools if possible. Also, my husband, who would work in Phoenix, hates commutingng with a car but prefers public transportation. Is there such a place? Closest major intersection where the office is located is E Van Buren & N 44th St (153).

There is public transportation but depending on where he works in Phoenix will determine if there will be public transportation. I work in Phoenix but the closest busline to my office is a mile away. There are many nice little suburbs that have great public schools and most of the neighborhoods are safe, crime can happen anywhere, just be concious of certain areas. The south west section of Phoenix (the city proper) is not an area where I would want to raise my children, or central Phoenix, but the northern areas of the suburbs of Glendale and Peoria offer nice housing, good schools and shopping. Gilbert, Mesa and Tempe also offer nice areas, but keep in mind it is a much tougher commute to Phoenix from those areas. If you could give an address where your husband is going to work, it would be easier to give you specific information. Email me if you want and I will respond. As others have said, you don't want to live close to your husband's work area, it is not a good area of town to live, ok to work, but don't live there. The DC Ranch area is beautiful but is not good for Public Transportation. I really think that Tempe, Gilbert, Chandler areas are the best place for you to begin your home search, with Tempe being the closest to the area your husband will be working.

Oh man, he's gonna work on Van Buren? Hope he likes hookers and meth addicts. I can tell you right now not to live anywhere NEAR his place of employment if you're looking for a nice neighborhood. Personally, I think Phoenix is kind of a crumby place to live, but I've lived in a lot of places. Some people like it, especially those who've never been anywhere else or only been to a few places. Are you guys moving here strictly for work opportunities? If you have a lot of options, I'd seriously consider looking into the other places you could go to. Driving is horrible here. Litterally some of the dumbest drivers I've ever seen. Education for the whole state is one of the worst in the country, so you don't want to raise children in the public school system. But we did have the honor of having 2 active serial killers (3 actually, since the serial snipers were two individuals working together) a couple years back. Not to mention the others the news probably didn't find out about. As for good stuff, there's really not anything here that you can't find in any other big city for entertainment. If you like 120 degree heat in the summer (they usually have to close the airport for a couple days because the asphalt melts and the planes sink into the runways from the heat) it's perfect. But dry heat or not, you never get used to it. Only old, reptilian retirees enjoy the summers here (you can occassionally find a few basking on a flat rock out in Sun City). Anyway, good luck finding a safe neighborhood in this town, especially near your husbands place of employment. Yikes...

Two words, D.C. Ranch in Northeast Scottsdale. Unfortunately 44th and VanBuren is a bad part of town, unless you like hookers and druggies.
