Do graduates from the University of Phoenix get work?
I have one year left at the University of Phoenix. I am getting a degree in Software Engineering. Many people are saying that companies will not hire graduates from University of Phoenix (or related schools) because they prefer an employee with a degree from a traditional college. Is there anyone here that has (or knows someone with) a degree from University of Phoenix (or related schools)? Or they successful or having a hard time finding work? Facts only please, no opinions!

I know for a fact that resumes from applicants with degrees from UoP's go immediately in the trash, as our company's policy is that these so-called "graduates" have no proof they actually did the work themselves.

This really depends on the employer. Some employers won't even look at you because you went to U of P. But others won't care where you went, so long as you have the programming skills. In software engineering for most employers, it's more about what you can do than where you went to school. So make sure that you get the skills that area employers want, and in this way, you set yourself up well for getting hired after you graduate. Make sure you know what the software engineering employers in your area want from BS SE graduates, and make sure you get those skills before you graduate. There may be specific types of certifications they want in addition to the degree - get those before, or just after you graduate, so you're employable. In addition, you want to graduate with real career-related programming experience behind you. If you currently work in programming, you're fine, but if you do not, then see if you can do some programming related work as volunteer work for a local charity, or get a part-time job (if you have time) with the Geek Squad or the Apple Genius Bar or similar. Or talk to U of P about internships and etc. As you approach graduation, if you're looking to make a job change, start looking for new jobs. Take advantage of your network - make sure that everyone you know, knows you're looking - and that includes classmates and former professors, people at your family church - everyone. In addition, use job boards like Monster.com and the tech-related job boards, local newspaper help wanteds, everything.
