It is the right season... lots of department stores will be looking to hire people for the holiday season. Normally 14 is not old enough but since there will be a greater need someone may consider you. I do not know what the laws specifically say about the age but I remember my daughter had a hard time finding something at 15. Probably the smaller the place the better your chances Good Luck!

About what is it like to live and work in Phoenix, Arizona

What is it like to live and work in Phoenix, Arizona?

Phoenix is a nice place to live. The people are nice compared to California and New York. There's a lot of entertainment. It is Very Hot in the summer time, but there's water parks and Lakes near by. Mexico, California and Vegas aren't to far from Phoenix. Good nightlife in Scottsdale and Tempe. You'd be surprised to meet some one that's born and raised here. There's people from all over that have moved to Phoenix. Unlike California, there isn't any nice scenic drives unless you go up north to Sedona/Flagstaff/Payson. So you can't just get up on a Sunday morning a take a nice drive without having to drive 1 1/2 to 2 hours.
2 :
well its going to be about 110 degrees to day, the lightning storms are awesome, other than that its a rat infested city just like new york, crime ect,, everybody gets out of town to relax
3 :
I was born and raised in Arizona - lived their until I was 25. I was a rare native. I'm partial to Phoenix because I was born there but I think it's a pretty great place to live. The economy is pretty good so the cost of living is not bad at all. You can easily find an affordable apartment to rent or a house to buy (although, the market did just jump a little on houses but it is still pretty good compared to California) Phoenix is a major city so there are plenty of work opportunities (mainly in the service sector such as customer service, teaching, police, fire dept, construction, etc) There is lots of shopping and hiking and sports. The people are pretty nice and there's great dancing, dining, drinking, etc in Scottsdale, Tempe and parts of Phoenix. It's hot but at least it's a dry heat - unlike the mugginess here in New York. If you get sick of the desert you can always drive up to Prescott or Flagstaff for a cooler climate. I moved away because I needed a change of scenery and wanted to pursue publishing but I'm sure that I will one day be back there.
4 :
It's hot! But that's easy to get used to after a few years. The weather is perfect between late October to May. There is diverse bunch of people here and for people like me who are in a multi racial marriage with bi-racial children, it's great. People can be very easy going and there is a lot to do when the weather is good. The surrounding cities are community based and you can always find a job and place to live. You can still buy a house for $150,000.! It's growing a lot and our Air Quality is not the best but I can tell you, I have much better life and am raising my kids a lot easier than I would if I was still in California!
5 :
I think Phoenix is a great place to live. My sister lived in Tempe from 1984-1989. It always felt like home to me...even in the Summertime when its 110 degrees. Im actually moving to Mesa on August 9th...I found a quaint 1 bedroom cottage (house) in a place called "Monte Vista Village Resort". You should check it out!!! Talk to Mary or Debbie in the office..they are awesome people to talk to. Im moving from California to Arizona because the cost of living is cheaper and the people are just as sweet as pie. Also, jobs in Arizona are booming right now...I have gotten back to back to back phone calls about jobs and have not gotten one call here in California in over a month. Take my word...if you are going to move to Arizona...you want to look on Broadway Road south to Elliott. There are alot of apartments for rent at a really good price and houses for rent. I think you will find it is worth living and working in the Phoenix Metro area.
6 :
not bad not good to many illegals to many different people from every where wages OK i guess it is hot most of the time people are rude i wouldn't go near Phoenix unless i have too bums laying around dirty old check into areas like surprise awesome place stay away from Glendale old side phoenix is OK if you pick right area other wise lots of Spanish that don't speak English i have been here most of my life and i would leave in a minute if it come about.
7 :
Phoenix is very busy...but on the upside there's tons to do if you want to have a good time.Stay away from West and South phoenix; pretty dirty and riddled with illegals/bums/prostitutes and drug addicts. The rest of Phoenix is alright .
8 :
Traffic is always busy on the freeways. Lots of people. Lots of golf parks, parks, etc. We are moving back to Washington state because of our families, and a job. Phoenix is a good memory I will not miss it.

My wife and I have 2 years ICU experience. I want to work in CCU, General ICU, or CardioThoracicICU. Wife wants to work in a surgical ICU or Trauma ICU. Any info about pay rates (other than general pay rate sites), bonuses, or perks would be great. Thank you.

I have no idea about the pay but i was lifeflighted to saint Joseph and the care they took of me while i was there was great
2 :
i can't give you any of the bonus info for other hospitals but i work for Banner Good Sam in trauma icu and i love it here. we are a magnet hospital (got the award in 05) and it's the best hospital i've worked in out of the 4 i've been employed by. right now for core staff (i'm not sure about registry or travelers) there is a 60.00/hr bonus for any extra shifts worked. starting pay is around 25/hr (not new grad) we are a 12 floor hospital with a 16 bed trauma icu, 16 bed ( i think) cvicu, and 32 bed med/surg/general icu. our trauma bay holds up to 5 patients. we do not admit pediatric patients unless they are over 100 pounds. we are a very busy hospital icu-wise due to us being in the heart of the city. we are the only banner owned level 1 hospital. other level 1 hospitals here in the valley are -John C. Lincoln (north campus-not deer valley) -Maricopa County medical center -St. Joseph's -Scottsdale Osborn here is the link for our hospital-hope it helps!! http://www.bannerhealth.com/Locations/Arizona/Banner+Good+Samaritan+Medical+Center/_Banner+Good+Samaritan+Medical+Center.htm
3 :
Good Samaritan (Good Sam for short) is a great hospital and it's part of the Banner Health System which is either the first or second biggest (I can't remember) employer of Arizona. Good Sam is one of the Level 1 trauma centers in Arizona also. http://www.bannerhealth.com/Locations/Arizona/Banner+Good+Samaritan+Medical+Center/About+Us/Good+Sam+Home.htm St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center (St. Joes) is another major hospital in Arizona. It is the also one of the level 1 trauma centers and was the very first hospital in Arizona. http://www.stjosephs-phx.org/stellent/websites/get_page_cache.asp?nodeId=5001548 I've got to throw in Maricopa Medical Center ("County") also because I work there in the pharmacy. It's part of the county government so it's got some great benefits. It's another level 1 trauma center and it has the Arizona Burn Center, which is the only one in Arizona. It serves as a regional burn center for parts of Utah and New Mexico as well. It also has the only Pediatric Emergency Department which is separated from the Adult Emergency Department in Arizona. http://www.mihs.org/ourfacility/index.html Good luck!
4 :
I can't tell you about the perks and what not, but depending on where in the valley you want to live there's Central Valley/Downtown: John C. Lincoln Hospital St. Lukes Good Sam Arizona Heart Institute Phx Children's Hospital On the west side there's: Walter O. Boswell Memorial and Del E. Webb Memorial, both operated by Sun Health which also operates several smaller specialized surgical/care facilities.

What are some nice areas to live and/or work in, in Phoenix, AZ? Also what areas should be avoided?
We are planning a move to Phoenix, although we do not know a whole lot about what areas are good and what areas are to be avoided. Also if you can give some insight into the areas that have some cool things to do would be greatly appreciated.

That's a difficult question for Phoenix. There are so many neighborhoods that aren't ideal, but are surrounded by really nice neighborhoods. The only way to avoid that is to live in North Scottsdale or other upscale areas, but those are very pricey. The best thing to do would be to come out and check it out for yourself. The cheaper, more run down houses are going to have more people in your neighborhood who you wouldn't feel safe walking past at night..to put it mildly. I live in North Phoenix..my neighborhood is nice/newer but I am like 3 blocks from a trailer park and maybe 5 or so blocks the other way from a strip club and a bunch of dive bars so at the gas station by my house you can see some interesting people. I work in North Scottsdale, and there is nothing negative around there besides the ridiculous prices. You really just have to come check it out for yourself. And there is plenty of stuff to do all over the valley so no need to worry about that. Hope this helps..
2 :
In my opinion the best parts of town are: Anthem, Carefree Crossings, Tramonto, Sonoran Foothills, the northern parts of Scottsdale, the Desert Ridge area, and the area to the north of Paradise Valley Mall. All of these areas of numerous activities for people of all ages, such as museums (Pioneer Living History Museum, MIM, and others), shopping (Anthem Outlets, Desert Ridge, and others), and of course there's a fantastic water park located near I-17 and Pinnacle Peak Road called Wet 'n' Wild - http://wetnwildphoenix.com/ Try to avoid anywhere south of Bell Road in the general Phoenix area because the entire area is going downhill fast, that's not to say that there aren't "good pockets" it's just that some areas are better left unexplored.

im not sure bout pheonix but in l.a you just go to your local housing authority office, section 8 area and ask for a list booklet that have available apartments in your area. but that's if you've already gone through the entire process and have your voucher already.
2 :
Once you have your voucher, there is a list that the Housing Authority can give you. In addition, you can look in a renters guide and call the apartments you are interested, and ask the manager if they accept section 8. That is what I did. It takes a little work, but is well worth it. If you find a place, and they want to accept it (it is guaranteed payment for the government's share each month), they can contact your caseworker and find out how to get on the list. Best wishes.

How does the 3D effect in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix movie work?
If one watches Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, the last 20 minutes of the flick is to be in 3D. I was wondering how would that work? Are the audiences required to wear provided 3-D glasses? Or is it a "simulated" 3-D effect without the special glasses? I might see the movie in IMAX 3D if it is available near a theatre where I live, but I will see it regardless if there is IMAX or not. So is it worth seeing in 3D? :)

About do graduates from the University of Phoenix get work

Do graduates from the University of Phoenix get work?
I have one year left at the University of Phoenix. I am getting a degree in Software Engineering. Many people are saying that companies will not hire graduates from University of Phoenix (or related schools) because they prefer an employee with a degree from a traditional college. Is there anyone here that has (or knows someone with) a degree from University of Phoenix (or related schools)? Or they successful or having a hard time finding work? Facts only please, no opinions!
Higher Education (University +) - 3 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
I know for a fact that resumes from applicants with degrees from UoP's go immediately in the trash, as our company's policy is that these so-called "graduates" have no proof they actually did the work themselves.
2 :
This really depends on the employer. Some employers won't even look at you because you went to U of P. But others won't care where you went, so long as you have the programming skills. In software engineering for most employers, it's more about what you can do than where you went to school. So make sure that you get the skills that area employers want, and in this way, you set yourself up well for getting hired after you graduate. Make sure you know what the software engineering employers in your area want from BS SE graduates, and make sure you get those skills before you graduate. There may be specific types of certifications they want in addition to the degree - get those before, or just after you graduate, so you're employable. In addition, you want to graduate with real career-related programming experience behind you. If you currently work in programming, you're fine, but if you do not, then see if you can do some programming related work as volunteer work for a local charity, or get a part-time job (if you have time) with the Geek Squad or the Apple Genius Bar or similar. Or talk to U of P about internships and etc. As you approach graduation, if you're looking to make a job change, start looking for new jobs. Take advantage of your network - make sure that everyone you know, knows you're looking - and that includes classmates and former professors, people at your family church - everyone. In addition, use job boards like Monster.com and the tech-related job boards, local newspaper help wanteds, everything.
3 :
2010 US News ranked the school as Un ranked. The University of Phoenix has been the subject of legal and regulatory controversies as a result of its alleged student recruitment practices and what some consider an accelerated academic schedule. There has also been concern expressed by former students, employees, and academics who feel that because the university is a for-profit institution, academic quality must then suffer. Its reputation is fraying as prominent educators, students and some of its own former administrators say the relentless pressure for higher profits, at a university that gets more federal student financial aid than any other, has eroded academic quality [Its] business degree is an M.B.A. Lite,' said Henry M. Levin, a professor of higher education at Teachers College at Columbia University. “I’ve looked at [its] course materials. It’s a very low level of instruction. In 2009, the U.S. Department of Education provided a preliminary report to the university that cited untimely return of unearned Title IV funds for more than 10 percent of sampled students. The report also expressed a concern that some students enroll and begin attending classes before completely understanding the implications of enrollment, including their eligibility for student financial aid. As a result, in January 2010, its parent company, Apollo Group Inc., was required to post a letter of credit for $125 million by January 30 of the same year [87] The lawsuit was set for trial on March 9, 2010.[88] In December 2009, Apollo agreed to settle the dispute by paying the United States $67.5 million, without acknowledging any wrongdoing. In addition, Apollo will pay the plaintiff's attorneys $11 million .The university has had various labor and discrimination issues. It paid $3.5 million to settle alleged violation of overtime compensation provision with the Department of Labor.[107][108] In November 2008 it agreed to pay $1.89 million to settle allegations by the EEOC for alleged religious discrimination favoring Mormon enrollment counselors.[109] In settling these matters, University of Phoenix did not admit any liability or wrongdoing. so in other words you will get a job however it depends on the Employers VIEW OF THE SCHOOL IS and how ready he thinks you are.l

Someone FINALLY proposes a good trade. It would work out,I'm not sure about Memphis though...
2 :
well being a suns fan... i like the trade not too familiar with damon stoudamire but if he is anything as you describe sounds good. Bulls looking to get rid of wallace?? i've heard about gordon but wallace is the beast in the middle on defense. trust me when i say this bulls do not want boris diaw!!! complete waste of 8 million (i think) Boston is definitley in luck with shaw marion but he has no compliment there like he does in phoenix with steve nash.
3 :
boston: marion is good, he will help the celts in both offense and defense. chicago: they cant afford to lose gordon, no one else can score like he does. memphis: gordon + wallace = more wins phoenix: damon is too old to play run-and-gun; while gasol is a good fit.
4 :
Boston doesn't make sense for Marion. They have Pierce and Allen, Marion doesn't fit since he is too small for the 4 spot. Plus, they are losing their two best young players and there only good post player in Jefferson.........the Celtics wouldn't ok this since the Suns have been asking for Green and Jefferson in a proposed trade this summer for Marion and Ainge vetoed it........
5 :
nice trade for memphis, but boston already has ray allen and paul pierce.....why would they want marion?
6 :
thats not a bad trade. it would work out, although im not sure if the grizzlies want to pay all that money to ben wallace. hes getting way too much.

Its not very good for the bulls.

maybe at a youth center? but most places dont like children voluntering alone because of liability issues, they would probably require adult supervision.
2 :
There is a united food bank right off of Mesa Dr. and the 60. You can work there. I had to for community service (10 hrs) and it wasn't that bad. However, I wouldn't recommend the summer.
3 :
It can be hard to find volunteer opportunities when you are 12. However, if you are sincerely interested in helping, explore what you could do at home on your own that would help others. The following website has some suggestions for things that you can do at home. One example is baking cakes for underpriviliged kids: http://www.charityguide.org/volunteer/fewhours/birthday-cakes.htm The site suggests contacting a local Boys or Girls club, but you can also contact a headstart/daycare center that serves low income families. If baking isn't practical, you could assemble birthday "baskets" with cake mix, frosting, candles, birthday plates and napkins. Let people know what you are doing and you can get donations of these items or raise money by babysitting or holding a bake sale. Good luck! I hope you find something meaningful.

2 :
You can deduct mortgage interest (not principal) for your primary home and a second home. You may also deduct all real estate taxes paid. Report both on Form 1040 Schedule A. Arizona also allows these deductions from the federal return.

About how that it's not illegal to seek work in Phoenix, are supporters of SB1070 going to home depot for a job

Now that it's not illegal to seek work in Phoenix, are supporters of SB1070 going to home depot for a job?
Or are they going to continue to b*tch and whine while collecting unemployment? Contractors now know they can pick people up, so there will be plenty of work for day laborers.

It is (temporarily) official everyone loses. The lawful American citizen loses because once again the gov't has COMPLETELY FAILED, to do what they are charged to do. Another knife in the back of the American taxpayers. The illegal loses, yes they do lose because some will beleive that they now have the green light to do whatever they want, whenever and where ever they want. One less deturant for them to stay and make their home country (overwhelmingly mexico) a better place to live. Instead they will come here, burden the tax payer, lower wages, lower the standard of education, medicine and social services. They will continue to be exploited while they exploit the taxpayer. This judge or social activist has made AZ a less safe place. She is a disgrace.

No. you didn't get it. They didn't say that it's legal to work, it's just NOT illegal to seek work. Employers are still responsible for hiring illegals and can be prosecuted.

Unemployment checks are easier.
4 :
Yeah that's the problem..Illegals drive the living wage down by working for illegal wages..Get it? .. If they were not here then the contractors would have to pay more to get Americans to work for them.
5 :
You misunderstand the judge's ruling. Under 1st Amendment protection it's okay for people to seek work in the streets of Phoenix. Hiring them is still illegal, as it's always been, but since the feds have abdicated responsibility for federal law it's likely no one will be prosecuted. BTW - The mob that harasses you at Home Depot isn't filling some necessary function. Anyone who hires these guys instead of going through a reputable service like Angie's List or Service Magic is just asking for trouble.

I can't believe that you seriously think that everyone who supports immigration enforcement is also collecting unemployment

The salamander was once believed to be able to live amid fire while the phoenix (a mythical beast) was supposedly consumed by fire and then reborn fron the ashes. “The Hearth and the Salamander” Bradbury uses this conjunction of images as the title of the first part of Fahrenheit 451. The hearth, or fireplace, is a traditional symbol of the home; the salamander is one of the official symbols of the firemen, as well as the name they give to their fire trucks. Both of these symbols have to do with fire, the dominant image of Montag’s life—the hearth because it contains the fire that heats a home, and the salamander because of ancient beliefs that it lives in fire and is unaffected by flames." "The Phoenix After the bombing of the city, Granger compares mankind to a phoenix that burns itself up and then rises out of its ashes over and over again. Man’s advantage is his ability to recognize when he has made a mistake, so that eventually he will learn not to make that mistake anymore. Remembering the mistakes of the past is the task Granger and his group have set for themselves. They believe that individuals are not as important as the collective mass of culture and history. The symbol of the phoenix’s rebirth refers not only to the cyclical nature of history and the collective rebirth of humankind but also to Montag’s spiritual resurrection."

About how do the carpool lanes in Phoenix work

How do the carpool lanes in Phoenix work?
I understand the hours and # of people required to go in the carpool lane, but when can you enter/exit the lane? Where I used to live, you could enter/exit the lane at the dashed line and not at the double solid lines. But here there is a solid white line at some places and double solid lines spaced further apart.

Carpool/HOV lanes are the same in every state. The only difference is the hours and number of passangers.
