About how does the 3D effect in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix movie work

How does the 3D effect in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix movie work?
If one watches Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, the last 20 minutes of the flick is to be in 3D. I was wondering how would that work? Are the audiences required to wear provided 3-D glasses? Or is it a "simulated" 3-D effect without the special glasses? I might see the movie in IMAX 3D if it is available near a theatre where I live, but I will see it regardless if there is IMAX or not. So is it worth seeing in 3D? :)

IT was indeed wicked awesome, nope, the theater I saw it at did not give anyone 3d glasses. I like Bellatrix a lot, I even liked her in the book.
